How to Make a Cigarette Habit

Let’s pretend you wanted form a habit. And not just some wimpy habit, but a major, mind controlling, and life changing habit behavior. Where do you start to make it a really strong habit that will feel impossible to break? There are three basic ways we learn habits; emotions, authority figures, and repetition.

An example will help explain this.

Let’s just use a younger you for the example, 10-14 years old. And for this example, let’s use the habit of smoking. If you don’t smoke…. replace the word “smoking” with any craving you get, or just pretend you smoke? It is an article about smoking after all.

When you were in that age range we can assume you were learning about your life and how you fit into it. You may not have felt as sure about yourself.

Kids that age sometimes feel self-conscious, dependent on others, powerless, not good enough, or??. We’ll call this feeling “bad”. This is not saying you felt miserable, but maybe didn’t feel “good” as you thought you should feel? Did you feel as “good” as you thought other people felt?

Possibly, (probably) not. Which would mean you wanted to feel better, or at least as good as you thought other people feel. What would make you feel better? That depends on the influences in your life to that point.

Maybe you had authority figures in your young life that smoked, like parents, relatives, friends, advertisements, role models. At this point in your life, smoking would have been seen as tough, strong, independent, self-assured, unique, “good”. Repetitively exposed to the thing you felt your life lacked.

This would create a desire (craving) in you to do this thing. A belief that smoking is what your life is missing. And not just in a “knowing” way, but a “feeling” way as well, which is much more powerful.

Then at some point you tried your first cigarette, and DID feel better. But you were not very good at smoking yet and since it made you feel better, you practiced it until you were good at it.

Life goes on and you continue practicing your smoking habit. Reinforcing the existing cravings and creating new ones. Like branches on the tree of the first craving.

People that have tried to quit smoking have spent a lot of time analyzing their habit, fighting themselves for control of cravings. But, you didn’t learn the smoking habit with the thinking and analyzing part of your mind, so why try to use that part of your mind to change the habit?

It is a lot easier to quit smoking with the same methods you started smoking with. A “hypnotized” state of mind combined with emotions, authority figures and repetition. Often called modern hypnosis.

Cigarettes Lets you Cope?

I’ve helped a lot of people quit smoking. While doing this, I’ve been told a lot of reasons why it is good to smoke.

I’ve been told smoking sharpens your mind, relaxes you, calms you, keeps you from yelling at the kids (or spouse), tastes good with coffee, tastes better after a meal. In short, makes you feel “better”. (I always ask “better than what”?)

You don’t believe these reasons. Not really. If you did, you wouldn’t also want to quit smoking. Right? Actually you CAN have it both ways. You can believe your reasons to smoke at the same time you don’t believe them. It is the difference between ‘knowing’ something and ‘feeling’ something.

A part of you MUST believe your reasons or you would have quit smoking by now. Now may be a good time to know there are no laws that say your reason to keep smoking has to make sense. They rarely do.

In fact, 99% of the reasons you continue can easily be proven incorrect. Maybe smoking keeps you from blowing up and yelling at your spouse because you’re mouth is full of smoke, or even better, you have to go outside to smoke.

And most of the time you’re AWARE it doesn’t make sense. That doesn’t change anything though, does it? Just one more log to toss on the fire of your motivation to quit. A fire that doesn’t have much chance against the ocean of your craving to smoke.

There are two important sides to this. The feeling that smoking will make you feel better and, the feeling you want to feel better than. That’s what needs to be changed.

If you’re thirsty you crave something to drink. If you’re hungry you crave food. If you feel bad (tired, stressed, overwhelmed, angry, lonely, whatever…) you want to feel good. And, whatever your mind has been taught feels good, you will crave.

This feeling to do something is what you probably call a craving. Many smokers have more than one type of craving going on. The ‘after you wake up’ craving might feel different than the ‘after a meal’ craving. The same principles apply.

So, what are you supposed to do? I can write several pages talking about this (and I have, look for them) But, it all comes down to modifying the feeling, motivation and belief involved.

First, the ‘bad feeling’ side of things needs to be addressed. If it’s too much stress, get it managed, if it’s a situation that makes you lonely, do what you can to fix it, or look for help.

Second, you belief that smoking helps you feel good (it’s probably the innocent mistake that smoking equals being an adult, in control, strong, capable, etc…) In truth, a cigarette is a plant leaf and chemicals wrapped in paper. The good feeling you’re anticipating from smoking is created by your mind. YOU make yourself feel better when you smoke. So it only makes sense that you can make yourself feel good by doing something that is healthy. If, your mind believes it makes you feel good.

And that’s the trick. Quit smoking is mainly about modifying behavior. That’s why the success rate of medication and nicotine replacement alone is so poor. The only current exception is Chantix and even Pfizer, the makers of Chantix, recommend behavior modification along with the medication.

Would You Like To Give Up Smoking? Consider Hypnosis

If you want to quit smoking hypnosis offers you quite a bit of hope. In the very difficult process of putting the butts down for good you are going to have two distinct issues playing off each other. The first issue is the physical craving. Your body has been used to receiving nicotine on demand for anywhere from a few years to 20 or 30 years or more. This is a difficult physical addiction to break. However, it can be done.

In reality no matter how ling you have been smoking the body releases all of its nicotine after 72 hours. You have to go through 3 days of serious physical cravings before the drive to feed your body nicotine subsides.

The habit itself is a physical habit. Over the years you develop an emotional dependence on the process of smoking. You get frustrated, angry, or emotionally tense and the first thing you do is reach for a smoke. That’s normal because you have trained your brain’s receptors to expect the rush of nicotine to help soothe the emotional issue at hand.

Hypnosis helps you embrace new forms of coping skills in order to reduce or eliminate the psychological cravings that are often the end to a quitting smoking campaign. Without these aspects plaguing you the success rate goes up immeasurably.

When you enter hypnosis for this reason you are given a new power over your mind. Instead of feeling hard cravings whenever an emotionally stressful situation crops up you tend to feel as though you can handle it and you go for a more appropriate coping skill. This allows you the freedom of choosing how you are going to handle any given situation rather than giving in to the body’s reaction to emotional stress.

Battling the cigarette craving can be so difficult not only because there are physical and psychological withdrawal symptoms but they are also so readily available. Unlike other drugs that require you to know where to get them, who to trust, and have the funds available, nicotine is a drug that is sold freely on every street corner. This availability makes it more difficult to gather the strength to avoid buying that next pack.

The brain takes about three months to cover the receptors that appreciated your cigarette smoking habit. As an ex–smoker, I can tell you that those first few months tend to throw challenges your way that you didn’t expect. Having a program that can help you get over the bumps and humps is invaluable. Joining a quit smoking hypnosis program doesn’t mean you’re not responsible for keeping yourself clean. It just means that you have a secret weapon that is there to help you if you consider faltering.

Comprehend What Electronic Cigarettes Are All About

If you smoke but want to find a healthy alternative then you should try the electronic cigarette. It is powered by a battery and allows you to inhale doses of nicotine through vaporized liquid nicotine. You can use these instead of cigarettes, pipes or cigars. Electronic cigarettes are a great alternative to regular cigarettes.

There is the same flavor and sensation that you get from these cigarettes that you get from traditional cigarettes. The great part is the chemicals are gone- at least most of them. These cigarettes allow you to inhale tobacco smoke but without the smoke. It is really amazing.

If you have never seen an electronic cigarette they look like a pen. They almost look like a plastic cigarette. If you buy a good one the parts are replaceable if they get damaged. The cheaper ones are just disposable and you can just throw them away after your done. There is even a light at the end to make it look like a real cigarette.

The cigarette has a light cover, light, battery, atomizer and cartridge. The cartridge holds the flavored liquid solution. This can be refilled in most models when it gets empty. Some models you have to actually buy another cartridge. Either way- it is very easy to do.

The cigarette is rechargeable and contains a rechargeable battery. You use a USB to charge it- you can charge it with an outlet, in a car cigarette lighter or plug it into your computer. It just depends on what your preference is.

The nicotine goes in when you inhale. Some are automatic and some you have to manually push a button to release the nicotine. There are also many flavors that you can get with the nicotine like vanilla and menthol. Just pick and choose whatever you want.

Attempting to stop smoking on your own is just too hard. Try using the electronic cigarettes to help you get over the cravings. It is much healthier than a regular cigarette and you will still be getting the nicotine that your body is craving. Check them out online and see if there is a store near you that sells them. A lot of malls now have kiosks that sell them. Find the flavor that you want and have fun with your new electronic cigarette. It is a great alternative for those that are worried about their health.
