How to Make a Cigarette Habit

Let’s pretend you wanted form a habit. And not just some wimpy habit, but a major, mind controlling, and life changing habit behavior. Where do you start to make it a really strong habit that will feel impossible to break? There are three basic ways we learn habits; emotions, authority figures, and repetition.

An example will help explain this.

Let’s just use a younger you for the example, 10-14 years old. And for this example, let’s use the habit of smoking. If you don’t smoke…. replace the word “smoking” with any craving you get, or just pretend you smoke? It is an article about smoking after all.

When you were in that age range we can assume you were learning about your life and how you fit into it. You may not have felt as sure about yourself.

Kids that age sometimes feel self-conscious, dependent on others, powerless, not good enough, or??. We’ll call this feeling “bad”. This is not saying you felt miserable, but maybe didn’t feel “good” as you thought you should feel? Did you feel as “good” as you thought other people felt?

Possibly, (probably) not. Which would mean you wanted to feel better, or at least as good as you thought other people feel. What would make you feel better? That depends on the influences in your life to that point.

Maybe you had authority figures in your young life that smoked, like parents, relatives, friends, advertisements, role models. At this point in your life, smoking would have been seen as tough, strong, independent, self-assured, unique, “good”. Repetitively exposed to the thing you felt your life lacked.

This would create a desire (craving) in you to do this thing. A belief that smoking is what your life is missing. And not just in a “knowing” way, but a “feeling” way as well, which is much more powerful.

Then at some point you tried your first cigarette, and DID feel better. But you were not very good at smoking yet and since it made you feel better, you practiced it until you were good at it.

Life goes on and you continue practicing your smoking habit. Reinforcing the existing cravings and creating new ones. Like branches on the tree of the first craving.

People that have tried to quit smoking have spent a lot of time analyzing their habit, fighting themselves for control of cravings. But, you didn’t learn the smoking habit with the thinking and analyzing part of your mind, so why try to use that part of your mind to change the habit?

It is a lot easier to quit smoking with the same methods you started smoking with. A “hypnotized” state of mind combined with emotions, authority figures and repetition. Often called modern hypnosis.

Cigarettes Lets you Cope?

I’ve helped a lot of people quit smoking. While doing this, I’ve been told a lot of reasons why it is good to smoke.

I’ve been told smoking sharpens your mind, relaxes you, calms you, keeps you from yelling at the kids (or spouse), tastes good with coffee, tastes better after a meal. In short, makes you feel “better”. (I always ask “better than what”?)

You don’t believe these reasons. Not really. If you did, you wouldn’t also want to quit smoking. Right? Actually you CAN have it both ways. You can believe your reasons to smoke at the same time you don’t believe them. It is the difference between ‘knowing’ something and ‘feeling’ something.

A part of you MUST believe your reasons or you would have quit smoking by now. Now may be a good time to know there are no laws that say your reason to keep smoking has to make sense. They rarely do.

In fact, 99% of the reasons you continue can easily be proven incorrect. Maybe smoking keeps you from blowing up and yelling at your spouse because you’re mouth is full of smoke, or even better, you have to go outside to smoke.

And most of the time you’re AWARE it doesn’t make sense. That doesn’t change anything though, does it? Just one more log to toss on the fire of your motivation to quit. A fire that doesn’t have much chance against the ocean of your craving to smoke.

There are two important sides to this. The feeling that smoking will make you feel better and, the feeling you want to feel better than. That’s what needs to be changed.

If you’re thirsty you crave something to drink. If you’re hungry you crave food. If you feel bad (tired, stressed, overwhelmed, angry, lonely, whatever…) you want to feel good. And, whatever your mind has been taught feels good, you will crave.

This feeling to do something is what you probably call a craving. Many smokers have more than one type of craving going on. The ‘after you wake up’ craving might feel different than the ‘after a meal’ craving. The same principles apply.

So, what are you supposed to do? I can write several pages talking about this (and I have, look for them) But, it all comes down to modifying the feeling, motivation and belief involved.

First, the ‘bad feeling’ side of things needs to be addressed. If it’s too much stress, get it managed, if it’s a situation that makes you lonely, do what you can to fix it, or look for help.

Second, you belief that smoking helps you feel good (it’s probably the innocent mistake that smoking equals being an adult, in control, strong, capable, etc…) In truth, a cigarette is a plant leaf and chemicals wrapped in paper. The good feeling you’re anticipating from smoking is created by your mind. YOU make yourself feel better when you smoke. So it only makes sense that you can make yourself feel good by doing something that is healthy. If, your mind believes it makes you feel good.

And that’s the trick. Quit smoking is mainly about modifying behavior. That’s why the success rate of medication and nicotine replacement alone is so poor. The only current exception is Chantix and even Pfizer, the makers of Chantix, recommend behavior modification along with the medication.

Good Reasons for Switching To Electronic Cigarette

A growing number of smokers are switching to electronic cigarettes everywhere. This is because they can continue to enjoy smoking without suffering from all the serious health issues brought on by regular cigarettes. Here are the reasons:

1. Nicotine Does Not Cause Cancer Smoking cigarettes has been proven over and over again to cause cancer. There are thousands of chemicals in cigarette smoke. It is these chemicals that are cause cancer and other diseases. Switching to electronic cigarette eliminates the smoke and the chemicals in tobacco cigarette smoke. Electronic cigarettes only deliver nicotine, flavors, and water vapor. While nicotine is still an addictive substance, the rest of the components are are harmless to your lungs.

2. Switching to Electronic Cigarette Saves You Money If you carefully choose a brand of electronic cigarette, you can save hundreds, if not thousands, a year. The reason is simple. Electronic cigarettes use reusable nicotine cartridges, and you only have to replace those parts when they are depleted. Tobacco cigarettes contain filters, papers, and tobacco leaves. Guess who is paying for all that manufacturing costs.

Furthermore, you do not need to pay for the heavy taxes that are imposed on traditional cigarettes because the electronic cigarette contains no tobacco.

3. The Electronic Cigarette Eliminates Second Hand Smoke There is no real smoke generated by the electronic cigarette, so there is no need to worry about nearby children or pregnant women getting second hand smoke. In addition, your car will not smell like cigarettes like the old days.

4. Switching to Electronic Cigarette Will Keep Your Teeth Clean Cigarettes are known to stain teeth. Since electronic cigarettes do not contain 4000+ chemicals, you teeth will either stay white or stop getting yellower.

5. No Fire Hazard Switching to electronic cigarette may save you from unnecessary accidents. Although electronic cigarettes still contain a glowing tip that lights up as you smoke, it is made of an LED light bulb. There is no danger of burning yourself or setting your room on fire. Smoke in your bed is finally allowed.

Although electronic cigarettes are a far healthier way to smoke, it is still a nicotine product. Nicotine is addictive and I strongly discourage young people from experimenting with it. If you are under age, pregnant, or seriously ill, you should never touch nicotine unless your doctor prescribe it as a necessary medical treatment.

Good Reasons for Switching To Electronic Cigarette

A growing number of smokers are switching to electronic cigarettes everywhere. This is because they can continue to enjoy smoking without suffering from all the serious health issues brought on by regular cigarettes. Here are the reasons:

1. Electronic Cigarettes Do Not Contain 4000+ Chemicals Smoke generated from tobacco cigarettes contain 4000+ chemicals, and many of them are cancer-causing. Electronic cigarettes deliver nicotine and flavors with vaporized water and several other additives, which are harmless to your lungs. Nicotine itself, contrary to popular belief, does not cause cancer. Nicotine is addictive though, so do not smoke the electronic cigarette if you are not a smoker to begin with.

In addition, electronic cigarettes are not tobacco products. This means they are not subject to tobacco taxes, and their prices stay affordable in the long run.

3. Second Hand Smoke Is History with the Electronic Cigarette Second hand smoke is perhaps the most notorious element of tobacco cigarettes. Well, since the electronic cigarette contains no smoke, the surrounding children will not need to worry about the risks of lung diseases associated with cigarettes. Also, your home will not reek of cigarettes and ashes.

4. Switching to Electronic Cigarette Will Keep Your Teeth Clean Cigarettes are known to stain teeth. Since electronic cigarettes do not contain 4000+ chemicals, you teeth will either stay white or stop getting yellower.

5. You Can Smoke Electronic Cigarette Anywhere An electronic cigarette contains no flame, so it is safe to smoke anywhere. And since it is technically not a tobacco product, you can carry it in your pocket and smoke anywhere you feel like it. This is impossible with the good old tobacco cigarettes.

While the electronic cigarette is an excellent alternative to smoking tobacco, it still contains nicotine. Although nicotine is not carcinogenic, it is still addictive and increases the risks of cardiovascular diseases. Therefore, if you are not a regular smoker, refrain yourself from trying any nicotine product.
